now arrive at the behest of
human unkind hands
the sunlight is bathed in grey, not from mist or clouds
the ocean waves boil with refuse as the smog haze air
turns days into nights much too early and our winged
friends refuse to fly o’er land that is care deprived
the sunlight is bathed in grey, not from mist or clouds
the ocean waves boil with refuse as the smog haze air
turns days into nights much too early and our winged
friends refuse to fly o’er land that is care deprived
so too, not till dusk, do terrestrials
come out to play
for they are cautious of man’s scorched earth
where the winds no longer carry fresh breath of air
nor do they sway barren trees to dance anymore
for they are cautious of man’s scorched earth
where the winds no longer carry fresh breath of air
nor do they sway barren trees to dance anymore
we, the caretakers, must awaken and lift up
from that pillow cover of mire
where our heads have
rested upon for so long in a darken room of residence,
extricating ourselves, convinced we’ve had no hand
in Earth’s laboring last breaths as we go to sleep
in denial but in ignorance and silence, we are complicit.
rested upon for so long in a darken room of residence,
extricating ourselves, convinced we’ve had no hand
in Earth’s laboring last breaths as we go to sleep
in denial but in ignorance and silence, we are complicit.
carefully, we must undress Mother
Nature’s attire
to wash and rinse out the grime
laden dress into which we’ve
clothed her and hang to dry and breathe her azure chemise with
white cotton sleeves and too, her pastoral skirt that will once again
sway in joyous winds and breezes where gossamer and feather wings
will once again fly and play
clothed her and hang to dry and breathe her azure chemise with
white cotton sleeves and too, her pastoral skirt that will once again
sway in joyous winds and breezes where gossamer and feather wings
will once again fly and play
Indeed, we humans must work hard to undo what we have done to Mother Nature....to try to return the ocean waves to the state they belong in...unpolluted and pristine. It will take a while, but I do think it IS possible. You expressed this concept so very well, Marcoantonio.
ReplyDeletethis is sooo lovely...how we wish that we really wake up and nurse Mother Earth to Her former glory and health...a beautiful journey from darkness to light if only we WILL...
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of us lifting the muddy dress and cleaning Mother Earth.........this poem gives hope - and direction. Loved it.
ReplyDeleteHow deadly! "the ocean waves boil with refuse as the smog haze air
ReplyDeleteturns days into nights much too early" And how much more deadly:
"as we go to sleep / in denial but in ignorance and silence, we are complicit."
Oh if only a little care and true mothering could redress our crimes! Excellent personification, and so touching and tender a solution.
YES. I love this gentle call to action, to love our Earth again.
ReplyDeleteI laughed at the term "caretakers" whereas we are like children making mess of all that we do and laughing at it.
ReplyDeleteThe world has been too careless in its lazy attitude of respecting the oceans of the world. Damage has been done, far beyond reversal or repair. We were charged with being caretakers; but have lapsed very badly...Nature pays the price..

We might have pushed it beyond the point of correction unfortunately and we're already beginning to see the consequences of climate change.
ReplyDeleteI like the hope you give at the end. I wallow in that hope. May we truly cleanse the wrongs we've perpetrated on nature. Love your poem.
ReplyDeleteMay it be so!
ReplyDeleteI like your form, with the introductory line to each verse standing alone.
I love how Mother Nature has become 'real' - as such she must be tended to as carefully as anyone of us needs to be tended to and cared for
ReplyDeletethis touched my heart. beautiful revelation of what we, the people, must do for the earth, our only home.
ReplyDeleteYes, the wonders must be taken care of. That we ignore our role in nature is very disturbing.
